Pa Odunukwe, Father of IONE President Passes On

Joyful Transition to Glory

The Odunukwe family of Akabo, Obiofia, Nnewichi, Nnewi, Anambra State, Nigeria announce with the joy of the Lord, the transition of their Patriarch, father, grandfather, great-grand father, uncle, teacher/headmaster/Education manager and in some cases Agricultural officer, historian and mentor, Joseph Anasimeze Odunukwe, which glorious event took place on Friday September 16th 2011, in Toronto, Canada.

J. A. Odunukwe was amongst the first to acquire Western Education in Nnewi and at a very tender age. He was the rear-guard of all his classmates at all levels, all his contemporaries having departed before him. Nnewi and Ndiigbo have lost one of their pioneers in education who influenced very many with his gifts of intellect, humility and service to others.

J. A Odunukwe was also one of the pioneers in the field of Agriculture, specifically the area of horticulture and land/soil management. He attended central School Onitsha, where his record still stands. He went on to Dennis Memorial Grammar School, the construction of which he contributed to, hauling bricks from the brick factory in Fegge, Onitsha with other Central School pupils. He was the oldest Dengramite until his transition. He was one of the pioneer students at the Umudike school of Agriculture, now Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike. He planted, grafted and budded many species of fruit plants and encouraged people to plant trees, and manage land properly to prevent erosion and top soil loss. He left a mark in many towns and in his compound which abounds in fruit trees, palm trees and ornamental trees. His love and knowledge of flowers was phenomenal and his life played out like the cycle of the Morning Glory.

Well travelled in his later years, he enjoyed God’s creation to the fullest. He was always in awe of man’s ability to use God-given talents and gifts. Papa experienced the four seasons of the year and understood the full meaning of the changing scenes of life. He lived a fruitful and fulfilled life.

To God be all Glory for a life well lived and a rich legacy left behind.
