Igbo Day

Igbo Day New England is an annual event organized by the Igbo Orgaanization of New England (IONE). The event, which holds on the 2nd Saturday of August yearly, is a free outdoor event celebrating the rich cultural heritage of the Igbo people of South Eastern Nigeria. The 2023 Igbo Day will hold on August 12th, 2023 at the Franklin Park Field, Boston Massachusette.

Igbo Day attacts over 10,000 attendees every year and it continues to grow. The event features the following among other things:

  • Cultural music and dances

  • Traditional masquerades (an important tradition of the Igbo people)

  • Authentic traditional foods of all kinds

  • Traditional attire

  • Exhibition of works of arts

  • Health Clinic

About the Igbo People of South Eastern Nigeria

Igbo is one of the three major ethnic groups in Nigeria, numbering over 40 million people. Both the people and the language are referred to as Igbo. The Igbo people are considered the most educated and widely traveled people within and outside the shores of Nigeria. An estimated 25,000 people of Igbo descent reside within the commonwealth of Massachusetts.

  • A. The theme for this year is "OUR CHILDREN, OUR CULTURAL REAWAKENING - Ndị Ntorobịa Anyị na Mwulite Omenala Anyị". This year's event is specially dedicated to our youths and our heritage.  competition will be centered around Cultural Dances and Attire”. Communities and organizations participating in the competition are expected to display authentic Igbo traditional attire and dance to traditional Igbo music.

  • Q. What are the prizes for competition winners?

  • The first prize winners will receive the Chima Chukwu trophy redeemable with $300. The second prize winners will receive the sum of $150. The third prize winners will receive the sum of $50.

  • Q. What does it take to participate in the competition

  • A. In order to participate, an organization must request a booth and pay the sum of $400 for one tent and $200 for the second tent._

  • Q. What will IONE provide to the organizations?*

    A. IONE will provide tents, tables and chairs to all organizations that sign up. IONE will also provide the DJ. Organizations who require the DJ to play particular songs or music for them must submit the information about such songs (name of artist and song title)
